The 1st Legislative Summit on the Great Green Wall in Africa marks a historic step in strengthening parliamentary leadership and legislative backing for the successful implementation of the Great Green Wall Initiative (GGWI).

The Great Green Wall is a flagship programme of the African Union, aimed at combating desertification, land degradation, climate change, food insecurity, and poverty across the Sahel region. Stretching from Senegal in the West to Djibouti in the East, the initiative seeks to restore millions of hectares of degraded land while creating jobs and improving livelihoods.

Conference of Heads of African Parliaments of the Great Green Wall (CHAP-GGW)

INTRODUCTION

The Conference of Heads of African Parliaments of the Great Green Wall (CHAP-GGW) is a parliamentary platform established to provide legislative support for the Great Green Wall Initiative, a flagship programme of the African Union focused on combating desertification and promoting sustainable land management across the Sahel.

Purpose

CHAP-GGW strengthens parliamentary commitment to policies and laws that support land restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable development in Africa.

Objectives

Mobilize parliamentary support for the Great Green Wall initiative
Promote legislation and policies for sustainable land management
Encourage regional cooperation and resource mobilization

Membership

The conference brings together Heads of Parliaments from the 11 core GGW countries—Burkina Faso, Chad, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sudan—along with other African countries affected by desertification.
